My work
My work aims to transform health and social care delivery for all young people, with a particular focus on LGBTQ+ young people, through expert education, training, and consultation.
My mission is to enhance professional understanding, empathy and capability across healthcare settings, while advocating for improved support for LGBTQ+ individuals.
Through academic teaching, professional training, and clinical expertise, I endeavour to create lasting positive change in how organizations support young people with their gender identity, sexual orientation, healthy relationships, sexual health and wellbeing.
Expertise and Approach
I am Dr Lorna Hobbs a clinical psychologist, trainer, lecturer and researcher with 17 years of experience working in universities, NHS services, and private practice.
I endeavour to create warm, open and reflexive learning environments, where people feel safe to explore complex topics.
I aim to bring unique insights from the different areas of my work to deliver comprehensive and transformative education and training.
Where appropriate, I like to have fun in my teaching, and I take an empathetic, celebratory, and solution-focused approach.
The principles of cultural humility, compassion and social justice underpin all of the work I do.
Importantly, my approach integrates evidence-based practice with lived-experience perspectives to create comprehensive and engaging learning experiences.
Specialist in gender identity and sexuality
Gender and sexuality are complex and evolving areas of healthcare. I specialise in helping organisations develop their understanding and skills to support LGBTQ+ individuals sensitively and effectively. Through my work in NHS services and academic institutions, I have developed particular expertise in supporting gender diverse, trans and non-binary young people, and in equipping professionals with the knowledge and skills they need to support LGBTQ+ young people to flourish in their lives.

"Lorna is an excellent teacher! Her sessions are very engaging and interactive, and are tailored to participants’ knowledge and experience. Lorna brings a sense of fun into her teaching, and is also skilled at creating spaces for open and honest discussion of sometimes ‘tricky’ topics (sex, gender, sexuality). I have invited Lorna back every year to teach the first session on UCLs Sexual Health module because she sets up a brilliant atmosphere for engagement and learning."
